Traction Engine

Also called the road locomotive. A powerful steam powered vehicle that was used to pull various peaces of equipment. Around 1860 the first self propelled engine was developed and  design changes made in the 1860's changed very little until the decline of their use in the 1920's.  It was also used as a stationary power source for belt driven equipment such as hay balers, thrashing machines, and sawmills. Traction engines were slow moving and slow turning. They were used in place of draft horses and mules when extra heavy work was needed to be done. Often replaced draft animals in grading roadways.
